21c Museum Hotel - Guest Rooms
Oklahoma City
The guest rooms at 21c Oklahoma City form part of a distinctive destination that harmoniously merges a world-class contemporary art collection with a 135-room hotel. Originally constructed in 1916 as a Ford Motor Company plant, the building’s design was shaped by the needs of an assembly line, featuring long, open floor plans and large windows that maximised natural light and ventilation. These original architectural elements have been preserved through the building’s renovation and have also inspired the design of the guest rooms.
The lighting design complements the historic character of the building while creating a warm and comfortable environment for guests. The large industrial windows remain an important feature of each room, allowing natural light into the spaces during the day, while carefully considered artificial lighting creates a more intimate atmosphere in the evening.
Within the guest rooms, integrated lighting behind the bedhead provides a soft ambient glow, complemented by adjustable bedside reading lights for more focused illumination. Decorative floor, table and pendant lighting introduces additional layers of light throughout the rooms, helping to create warmth and visual interest while maintaining the simplicity of the original industrial architecture.
The combination of exposed concrete ceilings, large industrial windows, contemporary artwork and carefully selected decorative lighting creates a distinctive balance between the building’s historic character and its new use as a contemporary hotel. The lighting strategy addresses the practical requirements of the guest rooms while contributing to a comfortable and relaxed environment, seamlessly integrating hospitality, art and the building’s original architectural character.
